How to organise messages connected with a dispute

Preserve the complete conversation where possible, including dates, participants and surrounding messages. Screenshots can be useful working copies, but exports or original device records may retain more context.

01

Preserve the complete conversation

Keep surrounding messages that explain the context of an important statement. Do not delete replies simply because they appear unhelpful.

02

Record platform and participants

Identify whether the material came from email, SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger or another service and keep the account names or contact details shown at the time.

03

Keep dates and times

Preserve visible timestamps and note the device time zone where relevant.

04

Export when possible

Use the platform's lawful export function where available. Preserve the export unchanged and create a separate working copy for sorting or annotation.

05

Use screenshots as supporting copies

Capture sender, recipient, date, time and surrounding context. A cropped screenshot should not replace the complete source record.

06

Protect private information

Use secure storage and create redacted sharing copies when appropriate while retaining the untouched original.

Important limitation

Privacy, confidentiality, workplace, interception and recording laws vary. Never secretly access an account, impersonate another person, bypass security or encourage unlawful recording.
